India began its campaign in Commonwealth Games 2018 on a high as weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and P Gururaja won gold and silver respectively on Day 1 of the competition at Gold Coast, Australia. The Indian contingent would once again look to weightlifters to add to their medal tally on Day 2 of the 11-day event.
While Sanjita Chanu created history in women’s 53 kg category by winning the gold medal after successfully lifting a total of 192 kg of weight. It was an intense moment in the last round when she failed to lift 112 kg in her last attempt. Her competent Loa Dika (PNG) needed only 109 kg in the last round to beat Sanjita Chanu 4 gold medal. But she also failed to lift this in her third attempt, so finally Sanchita Chinnu who won gold medal for India in weight lifting in 53 kilogram category in Commonwealth Games 2018. New Zealand’s Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet took bronze with 181 kg.
In Commonwealth Games India has good history of winning medal and always has been in the top 5. In 2011 when Commonwealth games were held in India, India was placed second in the Commonwealth Games medal tally. The Indian contingent looks confident this year also to grab more number of medals at Gold Coast Australia and to be among the top three teams of CWG 2018.
Sanjita Chanu gold medalist has also honored India proud moment in Glasgow Commonwealth things also where she also grabbed the gold medal in 48 kg category. This is really a proud moment for India.
