Nirmala Sitaraman is one of the women leaders who have reached the peak of politics in a very short time. Apart from being the country’s first woman defense minister, Sitaraman is also an economist and social worker by profession. Nirmala Sitaraman is the source of inspiration for many women in the country. Nirmala Sitharaman was born on August 18, 1959 in Madurai, Tamilnadu. His father Narayan Sitharaman was working in Indian Railways. Father was in the railway and this is the reason that Nirmala Sitharaman’s childhood was spent in various cities of the state. She did her Bachelor or Arts from Sitelakshmi Ramaswamy College, after which she obtained a MA Economics degree from Jawahar Lal Nehru University.
Nirmala Sitharaman got married to Dr. Parakala Prabhakar. Her husband Parakar Prabhakar is a resident of Andhra Pradesh. Prabhakar met Sidaraman when she was studying in JNU. Prabhakar had a PhD from the London School of Economics. Sitharaman started living in London with Prabhakar. According to the report of Hindustan Times , she worked as a sales girl in a London Home Decoer. Later she worked as Senior Manager at Pricewaterhouse Coopers. Sitharaman worked in the BBC World Service too for a short span of period.
Nirmala Sitaraman has also been a member of the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005. She joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2008 and worked on the post of party spokesman. As BJP spokespersons, Nirmala Sitharaman often appeared on TV channels. In 2014, she was inducted into the Modi government cabinet. Nirmala Sitharaman became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 2016.
On May 26, 2016, Nirmala Sitharaman took charge as Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (Independent Charge) and Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs. On September 3, 2017, Sitharaman became India’s first woman Defense Minister . It is also important to mention that Indira Gandhi also took charge of the Ministry of Defense. She took over the additional charge of the Defense Minister while being the Prime Minister.
Nirmala Sitharaman flew into the Sukhoi-30 fighter plane on January 17, 2018. Nirmala Sitharaman is the first female defense minister to fly in the fighter plane prior to this, on November 25, 2009, as the supreme commander of the three armies, former President Pratibha Patil has flown to Sukhoi in Pune.
